About DAPCU


NATIONAL   AIDS   CONTROL   PROGRAMME:
DISTRICT: VIZIANAGARAM

            The prevalent trends revealed that HIV / AIDS is of serious health concern and Surveillance data indicates that disease has extended to low-risk groups. Necessary preventive measures and I.E.C. activities are being taken up to reduce the prevalence of HIV/ AIDS among the general population and to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among populations having risk behavior. The Vizianagaram Dist. AIDS Control Society was established in 1998 as a registered society, with the Dist. Collector as the Chair Person and Dist. Leprosy Officer, as the Nodal officer and NACO, has initiated the DAPCU in April 2009 for decentralization of HIV/AIDS Programme at District Level through District Health Society and Mainstreaming the HIV/AIDS Programmes in NRHM with the District Medical & Health Officer as the Chairman for DAPCU activities.

         As a part of preventive measures on HIV/AIDS, the following activities are being conducted in the district by the District AIDS Control Society, Vizianagaram as per the guidelines of NACO and directions issued by the Project Director, A.P. State AIDS Control Society, Hyderabad.

Ø  HIV Prevention Activities:  NACO is focusing more on high-risk population like Female Sex Workers (FSW-3067), Men having Sex with Men (MSM-1021), Truckers-649 and Migrants-5363 in the district to prevent HIV from High Risk Groups to general public, in this aspect 4 Non-Govt. Organizations (NGOs) are working with above said populations by providing services of condoms, HIV testing, STI checkup, Syphilis screening and behavior change communications.
Ø  IEC (Information, Education and Communication): District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) is doing many IEC activities with an integrated approach with all line Departments like Education, Police, Sports, NYK, ICDS etc., Conducting awareness programmes at Rural areas, Sensitizing the staff of above said departments during their trainings, placing pamphlets, leaflets and posters at ICDS centers, Panchayat Offices and Hospitals. 
Ø  Covered Junior & Degree Colleges with Awareness programmes with the support of Collegiate & Intermediate Education. Dept. locally, Covered District level Sports events with IEC activities, Covered Major festivals in Vizianagaram Sri. Pydithallamma Jathara & Sambara Jathara etc., with IEC activities.
Ø           Social Welfare activities for People living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIVs):
A.P. State Govt. is proving Rs. 1000/- pension (NTR Bharosa Scheme)

Ø With the support of District Collector, Vizianagaram, DAPCU is forwarding the applications of PLHIVs for welfare schemes to concerned Departments like BC Welfare, ICDS, MROs and Civil Supplies.
